About Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience
Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience (HPN) Institute is the leading and one of the largest providers of neuroscience care in the state of Hawaii serving more than 24,000 patient visits in 2018 from Oahu, Maui, Big Island, Kauai, Molokai, Guam and other Pacific Islands. HPN is committed to these patients who come from all corners of the Pacific Rim to seek the most advance care and research treatments in neuroscience provided by Hawaii’s top specialists in the field of Neurology, Neurorehabilitation, Geriatrics, working in a holistic fully integrated multidisciplinary patient centered care model. This crossed discipline care model aims to provide evidence based patient care paths in a value-based approach to ensure efficient standard of care.
HPN employ the most advanced diagnostic capabilities including 3T MRI, Long Term Epilepsy Video EEG Monitoring, EEG, EMG, Ultrasound and Full Battery of Neuropsychological Testings in two campuses on Oahu (Honolulu and Windward) in a state of the art combined 24 clinic rooms Neuroscience Center.
Our patient centered care model allows our patients to access care through a variety of specialized, disease specific centers including Memory Disorder...s Center, Parkinson’s Disease, Movement Disorders and Neurodegenerative Diseases Center, Headache and Facial Pain Center, Center for Stroke and Neurologic Restoration, Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Video-EEG EMU (Epilepsy Monitoring Unit), Center for Brain Tumor and Neuro-oncology, Center for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) & Neuroimmunology, Center for Spine Health, Center for Neuromuscular Disorders, Clinical Research Center, Center for Brain Science Research, Center for Neural Engineering and Innovation, Wellness Center for Mind Body Medicine. Each center incorporates an interdisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of a specific neuroscience condition, harnessing the expertise of different specialists in a close collaborative manner working towards delivering the best holistic care for the complex neurological conditions.
HPN physicians and scientists also lead the state in bringing neuroscience research and clinical trials to the state so that Hawaii patients do not have to travel to the mainland to seek these advanced research treatments. In 2018, almost 1000 research patient visits took place at our fully staffed dedicated Clinical Research Center actively providing more than 20 ground breaking neuroscience research clinical trials (Phase I,II, II and IV) in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Epilepsy, MS and others. Our Clinical Research Center has full time dedicated research neurologists and 6 full time dedicated study staff including certified clinical research coordinators. We are equipped for phase I overnight PK studies and completed > 10 overnight phase I studies in 2018. In 2018, Hawaii played a role in the FDA approval of the first inhaled medication to benefit the more than 1 million Parkinson’s patients in US.
HPN is also Hawaii’s largest neuroscience academic and teaching program attracting over 50 residents, medical students, post doctorate, graduate and research students in 2013 from University of Hawaii John Burns School of Medicine, Tripler Army Medical Center and other international institutions including Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland.
