| This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Learn more 1. Incumbent will treat patients from all services in the hospital, to include inpatient and/or outpatient settings. 2. Independently prepares a treatment plan for each patient based on an evaluation performed by the therapist and interpretation of information obtained from the physician's referral and patient's clinical record. In cases where therapist is unfamiliar with referring diagnosis, they will consult with higher grade therapist for assistance in the development of the treatment plan. 3. Incumbent utilizes the full range of physical therapy modalities in which he/she has received training both in academic and continuing education. The therapist will perform comprehensive evaluations and develop treatment plans based on results of said evaluations. Factors such as physical and psychological conditions, energy expenditure, integumentary status will all be considered in the process of evaluation/treatment. 4. The incumbent will use various techniques such as manual muscle testing, range of motion measurements, peripheral vascular testing, sensory testing, nerve conduction velocities and mobility testing. Therapist independently revises/adapts treatment plan as patient either progresses or fails to respond to treatment. 5. The incumbent will evaluate patients based on consults from referring physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant. He/She will document initial evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes and discharge summaries in a timely manner according to the facility policy. In making treatment decisions, the therapist relies on knowledge of physiology, anatomy and pathology of disease, as well as skills acquired in clinical practice and professional work experience. Physical therapist will treat patients with multiple and varying diagnoses ranging in age from young adult through senior adult. 6. The incumbent will assist the Clinic Coordinator for Clinical Education (CCCE) in training Physical Therapy (PT) and Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students affiliating in the Physical Therapy Section. The CCCE may assign PT or PT A students as needed. The therapist will provide direct supervision of assigned PT/PT A students and be responsible for providing clinical educational experiences and completing all required documentation with regard to the students' performance during their clinical affiliation at this facility. 7. Employs appropriate evaluations for diagnosis to determine current levels of functioning using standard measurement devices and review of medical histories. 8. Incumbent will have the capability to use advanced techniques of evaluation in the care of the complicated patient with multiple problems. 9. Utilizes the knowledge from didactic and post graduate educational experiences to develop and carry out physical therapy treatment plans (i.e. therapeutic exercise, muscle re-education, neuromuscular facilitation, perceptual motor integration, fabrication and application of devices for daily Jiving, teaching adaptive or compensating techniques for accomplishing tasks, providing patient/family education regarding disability and splint fabrication and application). 10. Makes independent decisions concerning the refinement of established treatment procedures or use of highly specialized treatments. 11. Incumbent exercises independence and professional judgment in planning and carrying out treatment programs to meet treatment objectives for the population served. He/she seeks supervision only in unusual clinical or administrative conditions. Direction and advice regarding problems of treatment, effectiveness of treatment, timeliness of treatment and documentation may be offered by administrative and clinical supervisors, as appropriate. 12. Provides for continued re-evaluation of patients' performance with appropriate modifications to treatment as indicated. 13. Regularly updates Health Care Team regarding outcomes of treatment and current status and expectations. 14. Evaluates patient's living environment, when indicated, through home visits or consultations with other health care professionals and patient's home health care provider to assist patient in solving problems associated with that environment. 15. Documents an initial evaluation, including short-and long-term goals; progress notes; discharge summaries, including summary of treatment, outcomes in terms of goals set, equipment provided, and education provided. 16. Assists in the development of new treatment programs within PM&R Service and hospital wide. 17. Coordinates, schedules and provides expertise for Physical Therapy. 18. Attends multidisciplinary patient planning meeting; amputee clinic, when required, and other hospital-wide committee meetings when assigned by the supervisor.
