This position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: BLS required. ALCS required. Preferred Experience: Board Eligibility/Certification in Critical Care & Sleep Medicine experience in the Critical Care & Sleep Medicine field. Sleep clinical services are required five days per week which includes completing patient visits, educating patients, contacting patients with results, and triaging consults. Sleep clinics and scheduled procedures will occur during normal work hours. Weekend and night coverage will be required on a rotating basis, with required on-call time during ICU coverage. You will provide patient care to veterans in the areas of Critical Care and Sleep as the admitting physician in the ICU and sleep consultation for inpatients and outpatients. You will diagnose, treat, and manage patients according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques. You should have expertise in all areas of sleep medicine, including home sleep testing, actigraphy, polysomnography interpretations, and management of patients with sleep-related breathing disorders. At minimum, the critical care and sleep physician require competency in the following: Patient evaluation, establishment of medical diagnoses based on history, physical examination, and other criteria, and formulation of appropriate treatment plans. Sleep and ICU procedures including, but not limited to: -PSG interpretations -Home sleep study and actigraphy interpretations -Intubation and advanced airway management -Invasive and non-invasive ventilator management -Central and arterial line placement -Hemodialysis catheter placement -Bronchoscopy -Bedside ultrasound -Right heart catheterizations -Chest tubes Coordination of the clinical care of the critically ill patients and collaboration with the other services on the care of their patients. Establishment of communication among primary care physicians, hospitalists, specialists, patients, and their families Provision of inpatient and outpatient consultations and supervision of trainees in critical care and sleep medicine, including supervising ICU procedures Appropriate and complete documentation of all patient encounters and procedures using the computerized patient record Performance of daily rounds on all assigned inpatients and write daily progress notes. Primary responsibility of care of all critically ill patients admitted to the MICU service with the help of the residents, fellows, and APP personnel Night and weekend call coverage, as needed. Participation in activities of the medical center necessary to meet the requirements of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health care Organizations (The Joint Commission) and other regulatory agencies Participation in peer reviews, quality improvement metrics, infection control, and relevant committees Attendance at specialty service, sleep lab, and medical center meetings Participation in performance measures in the area of Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine and other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff or the Director. The incumbent will provide support for the Pulmonary/Critical Care and Sleep Medicine fellowship site directors in accordance with the recommendations of the program directors at Baylor College of Medicine. Fellow, resident, and medical student teaching is expected and required. The incumbent will also participate in core lectures series, Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine curricular activities, and quality initiatives as assigned.
