This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. ["The VA Northern California Health Care System (NCHCS) is currently recruiting for a full-time Addiction Psychiatrist to spend 50% of time working with the NCHCS ARTS team to provide addiction services to Veterans and 50% spent collaborating with the Sacramento Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act Pain Management Team/Clinic (SAC CARA PMT/Clinic) to help support patients with chronic pain and Substance Use Disorders, especially Opioid Use Disorder. The duty station will be at Sacramento VA Medical Center, Mather, CA. The Psychiatrist conducts assessments and formulates diagnoses; and develops treatment plans for patients with substance use and/or other psychiatric disorders, using an interdisciplinary team approach. The Psychiatrist manages psychiatric medication for patients; evaluates the general medical suitability of clinic patients for withdrawal management, detoxification and/or psychiatric hospitalization, including screening physical examinations; and assesses and intervenes with patients presenting in crisis. The Psychiatrist prescribes medications for the treatment of substance use disorders, including buprenorphine, as well as medications for other psychiatric disorders. Collaboration, coordination, and cooperation with colleagues within and across disciplines are essential skills. This Psychiatrist reports to the NCHCS ARTS Program Director, the NCHCS ARTS Medical Director and Director of PM&R/SAC CARA PMT/Clinic. Psychiatrists may also have the opportunity for teaching and supervision of medical students and psychiatric residents and fellows through affiliation with the University California, Davis Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Additional Supervisory responsibilities: Maintains a panel of patients with substance use and other psychiatric disorders in collaboration with other mental health disciplines and services to provide comprehensive mental health care. Oversees the administration and operations of medical care within the Addiction Recovery Treatment Services Program, directly supervising psychiatrists and nursing staff. Collaborates with other VA departments and services that contribute to the provision of mental health care. Communicates to staff and monitors performance and workload expectations consistent with local and national VA standards. Provides employee feedback regarding clinical performance on a regular basis. Assists in developing plans to improved performance when deficits are identified. Coach and mentor staff to promote and encourage continued medical learning and clinical excellence. Completes FPPE/OPPE and chart audits for credentialing of subordinate staff. Acts as subject matter expert and advises leadership regarding standard of care for psychiatric practice, regarding the treatment of substance use disorders, including medication assisted treatment, buprenorphine, detoxification and non-pharmacological treatment modalities.
