This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA Policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. The faculty at SVAMC also have academic appointments at AMC. The applicant, if deciding to join the SVAMC, would apply for the faculty position once on board at SVAMC. The Faculty of SVAMC are integrally involved in all teaching and research activities. Teaching responsibilities include resident mentorship during their rotation at the SVAMC and outpatient Neurology clinic preceptor. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Ensures Neurology care is delivered in accordance with hospital policy, meeting or exceeding community standards and VHA national benchmarks. Incumbent will have primary responsibility for supervising other Neurologists in the Service, and to ensure that they are performing to the highest standards of clinical care excellence, time efficiency, professional and ethical behavior. Assures care of patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings are smooth, patient centric and safe. This includes but is not limited to, collaboration and good communication with the Emergency Department, Subspecialty Services and/or Clinics admitting patients to the hospital. Supervises all operational aspects of the Neurology Service, including establishment of the highest clinical care standards, operations, and quality. Develops strong, collegial working relationships with other leaders within the medical center (both clinical and administrative), and with other section heads within the Medicine Service Line and other service Chiefs/section heads within the SVAMC. Working with these individuals and the members of the Medicine Service Line, the Lead Neurologist will develop a vision and strategic plan for the Neurology Service. Oversees the development and implementation of systems redesigns projects, quality improvements and assurance programs of Neurology services. Champion initiatives designed to improve overall quality through the use of evidence based medicine and peer review. Participates in clinical review process such as tort claims, peer reviews, management reviews and administrative activities, as directed by the Chief of Medicine and/or Chief of Staff. Involved as a leader in the organization's continued accreditation readiness activities. Incumbent fosters a culture of transparency, communication, collegiality and patient centered interdisciplinary team work. Uses astute business acumen to optimally utilize resources and adapt to changes, exercising leadership and flexibility. Incumbent is expected to maintain current medical knowledge and technical skills and provides both leadership and documentation that all Neurologists within the Service are competent with respect to current privileging within the Neurology Service. Maintain excellent diagnostic, judgmental, and therapeutic acumen in the care of veterans receiving Neurology interventions. Primary duties are to perform full general neurological examinations on established or newly consulted patients in the Neurology clinics, inpatient wards or Emergency Department for signs or symptoms of neurologic dysfunction. Responsibilities will include expanded use of clinical video telehealth (CVT)/electronic consultation (eConsult) to improve access to neurological care as well as increased use of Specialty Care Access Network-Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (SCAN-ECHO) to foster education and improve care.
