This position is located within Nursing Service at the Memphis VA Medical Center. The position is assigned responsibility for providing comprehensive, high-quality, cost-effective healthcare services to veterans who are rendered care at the Memphis VA. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Have/maintain current certification in BLS/CPR (American Heart Association). Have/maintain current certification in ACLS. Two years of inpatient medical surgical experience. Critical care nursing, Emergency room nursing, and PACU nursing experience will be considered. GI Lab Nursing experience. Clinic/Procedural experience. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Physical Requirements: To perform in a fully successful manner, the individual must have the physical ability to perform job-related duties which require lifting, standing, bending, transferring, stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, or pulling without assistance from another patient care provider or significant other. Utilizes Safe Patient handling equipment. The incumbent will be exposed to fluoroscopy and must be able to wear lead protective equipment for extended periods of time. A health examination must be successfully completed prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Employee Health Clinic policy. There will be intermittent exposure to blood and body fluids. ["VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards The GI Lab RN is a professional nurse who provides leadership and assumes continuous responsibility for the development, implementation, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of patient pre-intra procedural and post-procedural monitoring and teaching. This includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of the patient preoperatively and the interpretation of signs, symptoms, diagnostic monitoring with reporting, documentation, and implementation of ordered interventions during the immediate post-operative period. The GI Lab RN is accountable for the delivery of quality nursing care for the patient processed in the designated outpatient areas and inpatient areas. The GI RN has responsibilities which include assisting with circulating, administering of moderate sedation and hands on participation. The GI Lab is also responsible for post-procedural recovery of GI Lab patients. The GI RN will assist in coordinating activities and services with ancillary departments to promote effective and efficient patient care. Incumbent will demonstrate the ability to establish rapport with healthcare personnel, patients, and family so that effective patient care is administered, and appropriate healthcare education is delivered. With administrative oversight by the Chief Nurse of Outpatient Services and the Nurse Manager of GI Lab and ASU. The Staff Nurse provides comprehensive, patient centered health care services. In the course of these duties, using the nursing process, the RN assesses, evaluates, plans, coordinates, and provides treatment as indicated and agreed upon. The RN communicates effectively with other healthcare members as well as other interdisciplinary team members throughout the hospital to ensure continuity of care for patients receiving care within the VA. The GI Lab Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who utilizes the nursing process to provide direct patient care in the GI Procedural Lab. The RN is accountable for adhering to policies, standards of care, and standards of practice that demonstrates leadership in Nursing Service.
