This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible Neurologist Preferred Experience: Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: VA Directive and Handbook 5019, applicants must be able to perform the duties as a Physician. Light lifting (under 15lbs), light carrying (under 15lbs), use of fingers, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability. ["The incumbent will serve as VAMC staff neurologist in the Medical Service. Core duties include inpatient and outpatient clinical care, teaching, and administrative duties. Scholarly activity commensurate with an academic appointment with the university affiliate is expected. Protected research time is available for candidates with extramural funding and a track record of research productivity. Clinical Inpatient Service The incumbent will perform requested initial neurological consultations and follow-up care on inpatients, and precept rotating house staff and students. The incumbent will admit neurological patients to the medical service as appropriate. Approximately 25 to 45 new inpatient neurological consultations are requested and performed each month. The neurology service is operated as a consultation service and typically follows approximately 4 to 10 neurological patients at any given time. Outpatient Service Neurology outpatient clinics are currently held multiple days weekly. The incumbent will typically examine 4 to 6 new outpatients and will see 6 to 8 revisit patients daily. Participation in the ALS clinic is also expected. In addition, the incumbent will supervise neurology residents, the outpatient intern, and the neurology student in the clinic (see below). On occasion, the incumbent will be called to see urgent or emergent outpatients, as requested. EEG Service A part-time EEG technician performs 3 to 6 EEGs weekly. The incumbent will read the EEGs, precept a neurology resident as applicable, and dictate reports. EMG Service The EMG/NCVs are divided between neurology and physiatry. Approximately 3 to 6 studies are done weekly. The incumbent can perform these in conjunction with the physiatry staff, if desirable. Currently, the Chief, PM & R is primarily responsible for performing EMG/NCV studies. Teaching is performed on three sites: VAMC, DMS, and MHMH. VAMC Teaching The incumbent is responsible for teaching the neurology residents and students assigned to VAMC neurology and the other house staff and students caring for inpatients and outpatients. The incumbent may be asked to perform occasional teaching to others at the VAMC. ' DMS Teaching As a member of the DHMC neurology section, the incumbent will be asked to teach DMS students in rotation with the other members of the neurology section, under the supervision of the Chair of Neurology, DHMC. Supervisory The incumbent will be responsible for supervising the patient care activities of the neurology resident(s) and medical student(s) assigned to the VAMC. This duty encompasses reviewing all patient care encounters and usually requires independent examinations of and notes on all new patients. Written assessments of trainees must be completed periodically. Scholarly Activity/Research Scholarly activity is expected as an academic physician. Protected research time is available for candidates with extramural funding and a track record of productivity in research.
