The New Mexico VA Health Care System and the University of New Mexico (UNM) Cancer Center are seeking applications for the position of staff physician in an expanding Section of Hematology/Oncology at the NMVAHCS. The NMVAHCS Hematology/Oncology program is the major academic affiliate of the UNM Division of Hematology/Oncology and the UNM Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
This individual will also collaborate closely with the Divisional and Cancer Center Leadership at UNM. The Staff Physician, Section of Hematology/Oncology will have a major teaching role within the Division including its fellowship program. Qualified applicants will have an MD, current medical license and be board-certified or eligible in Hematology and/or Oncology.
The ideal candidate will be suitable for academic appointment at UNM at the level of associate or full professor, as evidenced by a strong track record of academic and clinical excellence. Qualified candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico based upon qualifications and experience.
Major responsibilities and duties of the position include but are not limited to:
- Direct, high quality patient care with particular emphasis on the ability to function in a multidisciplinary team
- Diagnostic workup, treatment and follow-up of patients with blood disorders or malignancies
- Participation in educational programs of Hematology/Oncology and Internal Medicine. Participation in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
- Didactic and bedside teaching
- Supervision of medical students, residents and Hematology/Oncology fellows
- Active participation in the conduct of clinical trials and other scholarly activities
- Adherence to quality measures and Standards
- Facilitate academic and research collaboration with the Division of Hematology/Oncology
Preferred Criteria/Experience:
- Residency in Internal Medicine
- Hematology/Oncology Fellowship in an ACGME accredited training program. (Candidates in the final year of their fellowship are eligible to apply, provided they will complete their fellowship before joining this position).
- ABIM Board eligibility/certification in Internal Medicine and Hematology and Medical Oncology.
- Demonstrated interest in teaching
- Track record of excellence in teaching, e.g., recognition from trainees and/or awards for teaching.
- Scholarly activities including research interests (clinical, translational or basic science) in any area of Hematology or Oncology.
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid time offer per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
